Are there giants in the world today? What does prophetic scripture have to say about them? In part 1, the mysterious Rephaim – the giants of antiquity – were investigated.
In the Middle East of old, they seem to have been universally present. They were a source of great fear to the Israelites, who had to defeat them in order to enter the land of promise. For Abraham, Moses, Joshua and David, these giants were a troublesome reality. But by the time of the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities, they seem to have disappeared, never to be heard from again. Have you ever wondered why this is so? Why are there no giants in the world today? Where are the Rephaim? Oh yes, we routinely see tall people such as sports figures who top seven feet, but by biblical standards, even these characters would be puny. There, if you’re under ten feet tall, you don’t make the cut. The Bible tells us that there were many such mammoth characters, tramping out there colossal reputations through the pages of scripture. We have no doubt that they were very real. Are they gone forever, or will we witness their return? Surprisingly, there is some evidence that mankind may once again see their renaissance, just as in the days of Abraham and David. Somehow, they re-emerged after their first destruction. Of course, the most famous of the ancient giants Goliath of Gath. He was well over ten feet tall. To get some perspective on his size, try to imagine him standing in your living room. In an ordinary home, his bronze helmet would punch through your ceiling if he tried to stand up. From the chest up, he would be in your attic. Or better yet, imagine him trying to go through a seven foot doorway to get to the next room. What begins as a comical thought soon looms into a frightening image. You’d be looking for a way to get out of the house. As the Bible measures giants, Goliath was probably on the short side. Still, he was big enough for the Phillistines to put him forward as their champion, and as strong as he was big. His coat of armor weighed 125 pounds. On his huge spear, the head alone weighed 15 pounds. By the time he was loaded down with a brass helmet and body armor, boots, sword and shield, he had to be carrying something over 200 pounds of extra weight. Yet, he was still quite able to fight. His enemies trembled with fear. Only little David, with his faith, his five smooth stones and slingshot, would come forward to fight Goliath.
Og of Bashan
In the first article on the Rephaim, I referred to the best-advertised of the breed, one Og of Bashan. In Deuteronomy 3:11, his iron bed was described as being nine cubits in length. Depending upon the cubit used for the measurement, that would make his bed between 13.5 and 16.5 feet in length. Og could easily have been 14 feet tall – a full four feet taller than Goliath. As I noted, Og was apparently the last of the giants, or to put it more accurately, the last leader of a dominant culture of giants …
“All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out” (Joshua 13:12).
Here, Og’s kingdom is the location of the last of the Rephaim. Apparently, after his defeat, the power of the giants became somewhat dissipated. Yet, as already noted, his progeny continued to trouble the Israelites all the way down to the kingdom of David about 400 years later. The Philistines, in particular, were fond of using giants as fighting machines that would terrorize their enemies tot he core. After David became king, he fought a war with the Philistines, in which not one, but four giants were defeated. As told in 2 Samuel 21:15-22, the four giants were slain in succession by heroes who sprang to David’s aid. The final verse tells the end of the matter …
“These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants” (2 Samuel 21:22).
The Rephaim, Living or Dead?
It it observed that the subject of the Rephaim is both curious and complex. Are they the living or the dead, or both? As giants in the pages of bible scripture, they are most certainly alive and kicking. The preceding example of Og is but one of many examples of the Hebrew “Rephaim” being translated into English as “giants.” They are the leaders of many of the Bible’s major battles and are repeatedly mentioned as contemporaries of the Old Testament’s heroes. But they are also presented as the leaders of the dead who, apparently, maintain their importance – even in the place of the damned. In a prophecy against the king of Babylon, Isaiah writes about the great monarch’s final demise …
“Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations (Isaiah 14:9).
The word “dead” in this passage is “Rephaim.” As stated before in the first article, they seem to be the “aristocracy of the damned.” They are the spirits of the dead offspring of the fallen angels who mated with human women in Genesis 6 after they were cast out of Heaven by God. They are also referred to as the Nephilim – the giants. They were destroyed in the flood of Noah, but resurface later after the flood once again. The spirits of the dead giants (dead offspring of the fallen angels – Raphaim, and called demons in the New Testament), are said to meet the damned upon their death and descent into Hell as revealed in Proverbs 21:16 …
“The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead” (Proverbs 21:16).
How strange it is that they are given the same name as the giants who once roamed the earth. Is there a connection between them? Are they perhaps two manifestations of the same beings?
Another Look at the “Sons of God”
We often hear strong objections to the interpretation of the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:4 as fallen angels rather than men …
“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:4).
The ancient world of the Jews, Greeks and Romans abounded with tales about how the gods came down and intermarried with mankind, producing demigods, heroes and half-man and half-beast monstrosities. The ancients believed that a kernel of truth lay at the center of these stories. But modern man has placed his trust in “science,” debunking the ancient stories and myths with layer after layer of so-called “truth” that is not accepted unless it meets the intellectual tests of academia. Science dictates that any phenomenon must be seen to be believed. Furthermore, it must fit within the strictures of recognized academic hypothesis. Inevitable, the mentality of modern science has made it’s way into the halls of theology as well. Of course, there are fables that are fabricated in their entirety and they should be dismissed as such, but there are also amazing historical notes that cry out for explanation. But under the current mindset, theologians now object to the idea that disembodied spirit beings (even if they exist) could intrude upon the physical world – and especially to mate with human women. Yet, in the millennia prior to Sir Francis Bacon, with his methods of empiracl science and inductive reasoning, that is precisely what was taught and believed. The flaw in his method is that man makes assumptions (hypotheses), bases upon his own belief and prejudices. From modern man’s point of view, perhaps the chief objection to human/angel interactions is that they just don’t make sense. He has been conditioned to think in terms of observation and proof. The scientific method cannot prove the existence of the spirit world. Even if it did, there is still another question – how is it possible that a spirit being could actually become physical enough to walk among men and women? But a moment’s reflection reveals that the Bible gives many examples of righteous angels who did exactly that. In Genesis 18, Abraham receives three visitors whom he welcomes into his home. He also offers them food and drink. Apparently, they are just like ordinary men, even to the point of eating and drinking. But the common explanation is that they are angels who have taken the form of men. Their demeanor is “physical” in every way. In Genesis 19, two angels visit Sodom to warn Lot that he must leave the city before it is divinely destroyed in a rain of fire. Again, they seem like men, rather than the common picture of winged angels in glowing white clothing. Even the men of Sodom related to them as ordinary humans. Daniel was touched by a “heavenly messenger” … or angel (See Daniel 10:18). It’s general bearing was “… like the appearance of a man.” In other words, this angel related to Daniel as another physical being – a man. In the New Testament’s book of Hebrews 13:1-2), a special message is given to believers …
“Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” (Hebrews 13:1-2).
The obvious message here is that angels regularly circulate among human beings. Their appearance is so utterly “human” that it is possible to meet a supernatural being without even suspecting that you have had a transaction with an angel. The simple conclusion is that angels can transition in and out of our world with ease. There is ample historical evidence to conclude that this includes evil, fallen angels, as well as the righteous angels who never left their assigned sphere of righteousness.
The Rephaim, Living and Dead
This would seem to provide an answer to the nagging question about why the Bible refers to Raphaim as both living and dead. Perhaps they are shades (or spirits) who are able to effect the physical world from time to time. This may particularly be true in societies given over to the worship of various evil spirits, including demons. Their two states of existence in scripture may help to explain the basic and troublesome question mentioned above: How were the giants of Genesis 6 able to come back to trouble the world after they were destroyed in the flood? Might the spirits have later influenced man genetically in some way, causing him to become a mutant – a giant? One of the giants of Gath was said to have six fingers and six toes on his hands and feet. This would certainly indicate at least the possibility that there was some perversion of the human genotype. Here, we become involved in the twisted world of the fallen angels and demons. In this dark and alien arena, it’s important that we proceed with caution. Still, though the subject may seem strange, there is ample information for a careful study. After all, this should not be a them that is unfamiliar to Christians. Even the apostle Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, wrote about the truth of our spiritual battle …
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12).
While it is impossible to be precise about the enigmatic order of the occult power structure, the three groups mentioned here are the rulers [Greek – archon], authorities [Greek – exousia] and lords of this world [Greek – kosmokrators]. These are the legions of demons who infest the globe under the direction of Satan. Historical observation of this miserable race always yields one interesting and perhaps unexpected trait. Namely, under great effort, when it suits their cause, demons are apparently quite able to manifest themselves in the physical world – in physical bodies.
A Brief History of Demons
Our word “demon” is a simple transliteration of the Greek word “daimon.” That is, it’s spelling has been slightly modified according to English convention. But the term, itself, like the race it denotes, has a long history that trails back into the dim recesses of antiquity. In the Bible, that word “daimon” is almost always translated as “devil.” In scripture, devils are univerally scorned as a people who personify evil. One of the better examples of the apostolic view of devils is to be found in 1 Corinthians 10:20-21, where the apostle Paul writes …
“But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils” (1 Corinthians 10:20-21).
As can be seen, our divinely inspired scripture regards demons as a specific group with an identifiable mission. The apostle Paul, who wrote 1 Corinthians, grew up and received his education in the Greek culture of Tarsus, with it’s great university. No doubt, he was familiar with the gentile view of the “daimon” as a race of people who could transition back and forth between this physical world and the spirit world, as the Greeks believed and taught. He would have known that Homer thought of them as the departed spirits of good men. Hesiod regarded them as the souls of men from the Golden Age, who were now a kind of connecting link between gods and mortals. Plato also thought of the “daimon” as a form of departed soul. He thought that when contemporaries died, they became interpreters between the gods and men. Aristotle thought that all men had demons that accompanied them throughout all their lives. Thus, in the era before Christ, Gentiles tended to think of the “daimon” in much the same way as contemporary man thinks of a guardian angel. But there is a strange darker dimension to the way ancient Gentiles regarded the “daimon.” This view is typified in the mystical practices of the ancient Greeks. Perhaps the best-known of these would be Pythagoras, the famous Greek mathematician and Philosopher. Aristotle and others thought of him as nothing more or less than a shaman – a conjurer, or sorcerer. He was said to be capable of prophesying, bilocation (appearing in more than one location at the same time) and exhibiting great spiritual power. Hierocles of Alexandria, writing in the 5th century A.D., likened his philosophies to a spiritism that invoked the superior power of the “daimon.” Hierocles noted that the “GOLDEN VERSES” of Pythagoras were the creed of the Pythagorean sect, which they knew by heart and repeated daily. Although difficult to understand, Hierocles said the verses were believed to give life to this esoteric sect. His writings give the first four verses as follows:
Verse One: “In the first place, honor the immortal gods, as they are established and ordained by the Law.”
Verse Two: “Honor the oath with all manner of religion.”
Verse Three: “In the next place, honor the heroes who are full of goodness and of light.”
Verse Four: “Honor likewise the terrestrial demons by rendering them the worship lawfully due to them.”
In simplified terms, the Pythagoreans believed that the living universe was comprised of an unknowable god who set up a supreme order. The oath is respect for this order. The glorified heroes were none other than the Bible’s “… mighty men which were of old …” (Genesis 6:4). They were the Graeco-Roman demigods. Finally, there were the terrestrial demons, who were thought to dwell in the region “beneath the moon.” The spiritual hierarchy of the ancients was fourfold, comprised of the gods, the glorified heroes, the terrestrial demons and men. The spiritualists of old and the theosophists of today are joined in a single belief. They believe that a spirit medium is able to contact the superior world of the “daimon” and draw knowledge from it. Furthermore, shamans and sorcerers of all ages believe that the “daimon” is able to materialize and affect the physical world. Ancient Gentiles believed that in the world of distant antiquity, demons walked freely among men, sharing their secret knowledge and power. They gave to man the knowledge of great power – even immortality. Down through the centuries, philosophers searched in vain to recover this lost knowledge. With the coming of Christ, the thriving mystery religion of the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and Romans was increasingly pushed into obscurity as the Spirit of the Lord spread light throughout the world. This religion is revealed in the New Testament as, “… MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH” (Revelation 17:5). Clear biblical prophecy reveals that in the last days, the old religion of the “daimon” will once again spring to new life, bringing with it the ancient, bizarre, perverted and monstrous aspects of the antediluvian world. To quote the most familiar statement of this fact, we have Jesus’ own statement …
“But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:37-39).
Clearly, this statement tells us that in the closing days before his second coming, conditions upon earth will resemble those found in the sixth chapter of Genesis. Does this imply that giants will once again reign upon the earth? There is no reason to believe otherwise. Specifically, these would be the accursed Nephilim and Rephaim of the Old Testament. Remember, the old pre-flood world was so constantly and consistently wicked that God contemplated the complete destruction of mankind. This is the kind of lawlessness and wickedness that lies in our future. One only need to research the occultic and dark motives of what is taking place at CERN to realize that this is now very possible and a very likely scenario of what will soon occur. Furthermore, we have exactly this type of scenario explained in the book of Joel where demonic creatures are running rampant upon the earth in the sight of all men during the approaching seven years of judgment upon earth known as the Tribulation period. These creatures will torment mankind at this coming time …
“Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.” (Joel 2:1-9).
Giant Hairy Bipeds
In particular, as we witness the waning influence of God’s Holy Spirit in these last days, supernatural demonic activity will become progressively unleashed. As as the apostle Paul put it in 2 Timothy 4:1, “… doctrines of devils …” will begin to come to the foreground. Today’s occultic books and movies abound with unspeakable tales of titanic powers and monstrous giants, aroused as if from some long sleep. In fact, this is a prevalent theme among such movie productions. But they are only the precursors of the real thing that is shortly to come. During the days of the prophets and on through the Christian era, the old giants receded deeply into the background of history. But they seem tantalizingly close to public realization once again. Beginning particularly in the last half of the present century, the world is hearing more and more about a class of creatures whose very existence is questioned. The prevailing belief is that giants will never exist again. But tens of thousands firmly believe that they have seen, tracked, and in some cases, met one or more of the giant creatures. In every case, these creatures seem to want nothing more than to be left alone. They flee at astonishing speeds when confronted by human beings. They are true giants, ranging in height from eight to twelve feet. Their footprints have been measured at 14 to 24 inches or more. These reticent anthropoids are known by many names: kaptars (Asia), yowies (Australia), yetis, or abominable snowmen (the Himalayas), kangmi (Tibet), sasquatch (northwestern American Indian), or bigfoot (western north America and Canada). Some naturalists simply term them “giant hairy bipeds” – or GHBs for short. It is more or less widely known that these giant creatures exist. But their reality is curiously fleeting. This has caused many casual observers to dismiss the thought of their existence as foolish. But they do exist – in many cases acknowledged by anthropologists and attested to by convincing photos, hair and footprint evidence and motion picture footage. In July of 1957, Professor V.K. Leontiev was camping in the Caucasus Mountains. He spied huge footprints, followed by the well-documented sighting of the “kaptar,” well-known in the region. The creature was like a giant man (8 feet tall) covered with hair, but with a human face. The creature he sighted was typical (if somewhat smaller than others of it’s breed) and, as usual, accompanied by the professor’s comment that he was dealing with
a man, not an animal. In the years since Dr. Leontiev’s sighting, an entire pseudo-science called cryptozoology has emerged. It is devoted to the study of these strange giant man-apes. In the fifties and sixties, hundreds of similar sightings were reported, as the “abominable snowman” became the rage of the world’s news media. Many hunting parties trekked into the Tibetan high country and the towering Himalayas to be the first to bring back a specimen worth millions. They all failed. In the late 1960s, 70s and 80s, reports began to filter in from all over the world, especially in the western U.S. and Canada. Especially in the western U.S. and Canada, tales about the “Bigfoot” were rife. And once again, the hunt was on. American Indians had long spoken about the “giant hairy men” who lived deep in the forests. In the northwest, the local tribes named them “sasquatch.” Indians believed that these creatures lived in family units, sought out remote areas, hated contact with humans, and were possessed with special “senses” that made it impossible to find them. In actuality, these abstruse anthropoids have been reported all over the world. In our country, sightings have ranged from coast to coast and border to border. But they are particularly well observed in Washington, Oregon, Indiana and states throughout the Midwest. In the summer of 1972, a series of typical encounters was reported – this time in northeastern Missouri. Locals and the news media dubbed the creature “Momo” (short for “Missouri Monster”). The first sighting was experienced by two young women who had just laid out a picnic lunch in a beautiful and wooded area. As they were eating, the creature appeared in the brush nearby. One of them recalled, “We were eating our lunch when we both wrinkled up our noses at the same time. I never smelled anything as bad in my life.” Reportedly, the creature smelled as bad as a whole family of skunks. They ran to their car and locked themselves in. When the
creature found that it couldn’t open the doors, it contented itself to eat their picnic lunch and amble back into the woods. Like a host of other witnesses, they described it as a giant man, saying, “The face was definitely human. It was more like a hairy human.” They were also frightened beyond description. Many other sightings were reported in the area, but no one could ever get close to the monster. Hundreds of law enforcement agencies became involved in the quest – all ending up frustrated. This is a typical feature that occurs when humans encounter these creatures. They are giant hairy beings who smell to high heaven – yet, who seem to be able to hide in a bush and disappear without a trace. Soon thereafter, similar reports were noted in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. For a time, there was a daily report of the latest sightings in the newspapers. Then they were gone. Worldwide, there are literally thousands of similar reports, continuing to the present day. Usually, the creatures are accompanied by a retching odor that people describe as the worst thing they’ve ever smelled. Back in the woods of the Northwest United States and Canada, vigorous reports continue unabated to the present day. Usually, the creatures are accompanied by a retching odor that people describe as the worst thing they have every smelled. Back in the woods of the northwest and Canada, vigorous reports continue unabated to the present day. Such reports are so common that the creatures are now protected by law in many communities. They are thought to be so “human-like” in appearance that it is considered a capital crime to kill one.
Enter the “Daimon”
What is not widely known is that Bigfoot sightings are commonly accompanied by phenomena usually attributed to demons. Their appearance is likely to be accompanied by a ghostly rapping, unidentifiable noises, the levitation or translocation of ordinary household objects, disembodied voices and flying lights in the night. The Kaiser family of Rising Sun, Indiana had a rather typical experience in May of 1969. On the evening of the 18th, the power to their rural home blacked out for two hours. Unknown to them, their surrounding neighbors had watched glowing UFOs in the vicinity of their house on that night and the night before. Their son checked around the farm, trying to establish the cause of the blackout. He was confronted by one of the typical giant, hairy, smelly beasts – frightening beyond description. A reporter (James Clark) who covered the case, wrote that Kaiser reported
that the creature made a strange grunting sound, turned, leaped over the a ditch and disappeared. Modern man is bedeviled by many such phenomena. hauntings, poltergeist phenomena, psychic behavior, bigfoot sightings and UFOs all exhibit the vexatious tendency to avoid capture. Thus the “scientific” mind, operating with the prejudice that such things cannot exist to begin with, remains smugly satisfied. Respected scientific journals and media outlets never treat these common subjects with anything resembling objectivity. And woe be unto the unprejudiced observer who, after an encounter with these “nonexistent” phenomena, must prove his sanity. But you’re saying, “Wait a minute, the giants of the Bible were visible and real. They didn’t disappear like spooks.” And right you are … to a point. In fact, however, they did disappear into the dusty pages of history … for the second time. The first time they disappeared was in the flood of Noah. The Bible tells us that only Noah and his family came through the flood. Yet, somehow, the giants came back again to plague Abraham, Moses and the Davidic kingdom. While we cannot be dogmatic, we would say that somehow, the “daimon” interceded in fallen man’s development, producing the living Rephaim.
The Prophetic Conclusion
As earlier noted, we are now living at the end of the Christian era, a time when evil supernatural manifestations have been suppressed. The restraining power of God’s Holy Spirit is, without a doubt, the agency responsible for this blessed condition. Regarding the unveiling last days evil forces, specifically the Antichrist, the apostle Paul writes …
“And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders” (2 Thessalonians 2:6-9).
Paul, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, tells us with extreme clarity that the Antichrist will be revealed on a wave of demonic activity, no doubt including the alien phenomena discussed in this and other articles on this website concerning this subject. Today, the “daimon” and his ilk are steadily re-emerging in more and more blatant displays of strange activity. Current stories of UFO abductions, grotesque animal mutilations, genetic experiments and pseudo-technological razzle-dazzle are capped off by the furtive manifestations of GHB. When the Holy Spirit is finally “… taken out of the way …,” who knows what evils will hurl themselves upon a naive society? It is not beyond reason that when spiritual restraints are finally removed, the giant Rephaim will once again tread out their grim oppression upon the earth. Today, they live in the vaults of Hades and the shadows of the forests. One day, their horror will appear in broad daylight in the approaching Tribulation period for all of those left behind after the rapture of the true church of born again believers has taken place. It is the horrific Tribulation period described in the book of Revelation and the book of Joel cited above. The message is this … as these phenomena become increasingly prominent, it will be another compelling reason to believe that we are living in the closing days of the church age. As Hebrews 10:24-25 says so convincingly …
“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24:25).
We definitely see the day approaching. Scripture also reveals that every man and woman “born again” in Christ will escape the horror of the coming Tribulation period through a stunning event called the Rapture, which will see Christ himself supernaturally call the true church home into Heaven as millions disappear off the face of the earth. The next question you may be asking is … O.K., what is this “born again” state of existence you’re speaking about? Keep on reading below.
THE WAY OUT AND YOU
In order to accept the offer of God’s grace and his salvation, you must take the crucial three steps of
1. Agreeing – A belief and agreeing with God in all that he says in his word, the Bible, about the fact that you are separated from God, as every man and woman on the face of the earth are before accepting his salvation. The Bible reveals that all are separated from him in a spiritual state of death, or in another way that the Bible puts it, in a state of sin, that will result in eternal damnation. Agreeing with God in your heart that you are in need of his salvation. The Bible reveals that God looks upon the heart of a man, and thus, responds accordingly to the man or woman who comes to him for salvation in recognition of his inability to save himself. The Bible makes these facts very clear – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). The Bible describes these three kinds of death: physical death (the state experienced when life leaves our bodies); spiritual death (spiritual separation from God caused by our state of spiritual death, or state of sin that results in outward acts of sin on a daily basis as the Bible also puts it – the state of sin is received from the first man Adam); and finally eternal death (the fixed state entered into by the individual who dies physically while he or she is dead spiritually). It is eternal death, in particular, which is the horrible result of receiving the wages of sin. The Lord Jesus Christ frequently described such a death as being eternal (without end) in a destiny which he called Hell. He described Hell as a literal place of judgment (Matthew 13:42); a place of everlasting fire (Matthew 18:8); a place of torment (Luke 16:24,28); a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:50); a place of remorse (Mark 9:44-48); of bitter memory (Luke 16:25), and a place originally prepared for the Devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). In fact, Jesus more often warned about Hell than he spoke about Heaven. It is not God’s will or desire that any person should be consigned to perish in Hell (2 Peter 3:9), but rather that all should come to repentance of unbelief toward him and believe on him for the salvation of the individual’s soul. But God’s justice requires that the “soul who sins” (remains in it’s state of death or state of sin) is the one who will die eternally (Ezekiel 18:4). So, agree with God, admitting that you are unable to save yourself and in a state of sin under God’s just condemnation for that sin and that you are in need of his salvation.
2. Believing – Then, believe that God does not want you to perish eternally in the torment of Hell because of your sin. Believe that God loves you so much that he provided a way whereby he could still be a just, holy and righteous God, and yet pardon you. Believe that God did not just overlook sin, but that he sent his only begotten son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to provide salvation by personally paying the penalty for sin. Believe that Jesus Christ, whose life, death, burial and resurrection is the best-attested fact of antiquity, did come to earth to live, die, rise again and ascend to Heaven in order to provide justification and salvation for all who trust him. Believe that he, and he alone, can save you because he has fully satisfied the just demands of God. Believe that you can’t become righteous in God’s sight by your own effort. Believe that he wants to save you and that he will save you. The Bible provides a solid basis for such belief …
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:16-17).
“But God demonstrates his love toward us in this: while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
God presented him (Jesus Christ) as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished – he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies the man or woman who has faith in Jesus (Romans 3:25-26).
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures … ” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
“Jesus answered, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out [drive away]” (John 6:37).
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).
3. Calling – It is not enough to agree with God, admit your need, and believe that Christ can and will save you. You must act upon those facts. You must repent of the sin of your unbelief toward him and actively call upon him for the salvation of your soul based on the fact that you cannot save yourself because of your sins. You must be willing to completely turn from your own efforts to save yourself or from any other hope. You must come to Christ, calling upon him for salvation and counting on the fact that he will do what he has promised. This means simply taking the gift of pardon and eternal life which he offers. Merely believing about Jesus Christ without coming to him makes as much sense and is as effective as believing that a medication can successfully treat a fatal disease, but failing to take it. Yet again, the Bible emphatically and authoritatively provides the basis for such statements:
“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18).
The word translated “believe” here means to “rest one’s entire weight and trust on the object or person in which the belief is placed.” It requires action in keeping with the intellectual assent of that belief.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
” … but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
The logical question you may be asking at this point is: “how do I come to Christ and call upon him?” The answer is that “calling upon the Lord” is just another term for praying, or talking to God. To talk to God is not a complicated process, dependent upon some special rituals. God has invited people to approach him through his Son in simple, straightforward terms. In fact, Jesus approved of the dishonest, despised tax collector who simply prayed, “God be merciful to me, a sinner.” While the exact words of your prayer to God are not of vital importance (since God sees and knows the attitude of your heart), the following is the kind of prayer that you could pray in calling upon God for salvation …
“Dear Lord Jesus: I realize that I need you. I admit that I have sinned and that I deserve your just, eternal punishment for that sin. But I am sorry for my sin and I am turning to you and asking for forgiveness. I believe that you died and rose again to pay sin’s penalty on my behalf. I come to you and open my heart to you. I ask you to come into my life, forgive me for all of my sin and make me your child. I invite you to take control of my life and to cause me to be the kind of person you would have me to be. I thank you for doing this because you have promised that whosoever calls upon you, as I am doing now, shall be saved. I pray this in the name of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”
If this prayer expresses the desire of your heart, I urge you to sincerely and genuinely express it to God as your prayer. The Bible makes clear that when we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ in our heart, God forgives our sins and counts us righteous, and that when we openly confess with our mouth what we have done in our heart, God gives us assurance of that salvation (Romans 10:9-10).
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” (John 3:3-7).
